(27 may. 1912, Quincy, Mass., EE.UU.–18 jun. 1982, Ossining, N.Y.).

Cuentista y novelista estadounidense. Cheever vivió gran parte de su vida en el sur de Connecticut. Sus cuentos aparecieron principalmente en The New Yorker. Su prosa clara y elegante narra el drama y la tristeza de la vida en los cómodos suburbios de EE.UU. y recurre a menudo al género del cuento fantástico y la comedia irónica. Se lo ha llamado el Chejov de los suburbios. Sus antologías incluyen The Enormous Radio [La monstruosa radio] (1953), The Brigadier and the Golf Widow [El brigadier] (1964) y The Stories of John Cheever [Relatos de John Cheever] (1978, Premio Pulitzer). Entre sus novelas se destacan La familia Wapshot (1957), El escándalo Wapshot (1964) y Falconer [Halconero] (1977). Sus reveladores diarios se publicaron en 1991. Dos de sus hijos, Susan y Benjamin, también fueron escritores.
